THAT’S MY STORY...AND AM STICKING TO IT
WHATS YOURS????

It was a nice morning in May. I was in my home village in Bosnia. I was about to have breakfast. I often heard people talking about the war going on around us but I could not imagine it happening to me. That morning it did and it turned my life upside down. The soldiers came to our compound and took my Daddy away with other men. I was crying. All the women and children were taken to a camp and we stayed there for two weeks. Later they let us go to our village. Back to burnt houses, back to nothing. Sometimes I have nightmares and think that the soldiers are coming to get me again . . .

That’s the story of a 13year old refugee girl from Bosnia. Unfortunately, this story relates to many people you find out there .Waking up one morning only to find out that your dreams have been deferred. You think to yourself, in five years time where will I be? It’s like every hope has been dashed away. Guess what??? ...you are not alone. I was watching one episode of The Monique show on BET one Thursday afternoon.Incidentally; she had Korto Momolu, one of the contestants in the Project Runway series as her guest. There she told the story of how she rose from grass to grace. Her family was forced to leave Liberia during the civil war in the 90’s and they became refugees in Canada. At the age of 16, she had to abandon her education and take up a job just to support her family. It broke my heart when she mentioned that she doesn’t have any pictures of her childhood as they lost everything. But now she has achieved so much because she never gave up. She has become one of the worlds recognised upcoming fashion designers.Thats her story.

At some point in life, we are bound to encounter some challenges. It does not matter how big or small they may be, what really matters is the attitude we develop towards them. You may choose to indulge in self pity but know that it never erases the problem. From Korto’s story we see that positive attitude is what we need in everyday life. Always hope for the better.  Do not let your problems define you rather do the opposite.Remeber, Oprah Winefry  never gave up, Henry Ford never gave up, Nelson Mandela never gave up ,and I could go on. So why should you give up your dreams? You could defer them but never let them die. Like Zig Ziglar would say ‘If you can dream it then you can achieve it’. Whatever difficulty you may be passing, don’t let them be an excuse for not becoming all that you want to be. The big question is, do you use your problems as an excuse for your current condition? Have you given up hope on your deferred dreams? Have you had a rough past and you don’t see the point in trying again?

What exactly is your story?

Love,

Lily.
